How TOPIK levels work
TOPIK, the Test of Proficiency in Korean, is run by Korea's National Institute for International Education. TOPIK I covers beginner levels 1 and 2 and has listening and reading sections. TOPIK II covers intermediate and advanced levels 3 to 6 and adds a writing section.
You do not choose a level when you register. You sit TOPIK I or TOPIK II, and your level is decided from your total score afterwards. A total below the lowest cut-off means no level is awarded for that test.
Total score, no section minimum
Your level depends only on the sum of your section scores. There is no separate pass mark for listening, reading or writing, so a weak section can be made up by a strong one. The calculator adds your scores and compares the total with the official cut-offs in the table below.
If you are between two levels, the calculator also shows how many more points you would have needed for the next one. This can help you decide which skill to focus on before your next attempt.
Paper and internet-based tests
TOPIK is offered on paper (PBT) and on computer (IBT). Both lead to the same levels and have the same status, but they use different score scales: each section of the paper test is scored out of 100, and each section of the internet-based test out of 200. That is why the cut-off numbers are different. Choose the format you took before entering your scores.
The speaking test is a separate exam with its own scaled score. It cannot be calculated from raw points, so it is not included in this calculator.
Results and how long they last
Results are published on the official website on the announcement date in the schedule, at the time shown in Korea time. A TOPIK result is valid for 2 years from the announcement date, which matters if you are applying to a university or for a visa that asks for a recent score.
Taking TOPIK outside Korea
The paper test is held on Saturdays in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Oceania and on Sundays in Asia, in the same week as in Korea. Not every test is held in every country, and registration outside Korea is handled by local organisations with their own dates and fees.
In Taiwan, TOPIK is administered by the Language Training and Testing Center (LTTC). In Japan, it is administered by the Korean Educational Foundation. Check their sites for the tests offered locally and for registration periods.
Frequently asked questions
- How many points do I need for TOPIK level 2?
- On the paper-based TOPIK I, level 2 starts at 140 points out of 200. On the internet-based TOPIK I, it starts at 236 out of 400.
- Is there a minimum score for each section?
- No. Levels are decided by the total score only, so there is no separate minimum for listening, reading or writing.
- What score do I need for level 6?
- On the paper-based TOPIK II, level 6 starts at 230 points out of 300. On the internet-based TOPIK II, it starts at 431 out of 600.
- Why are the IBT cut-offs higher than the PBT cut-offs?
- The internet-based test uses a larger score scale, with each section scored out of 200 instead of 100. The levels mean the same thing in both formats.
- How long is a TOPIK score valid?
- A TOPIK result is valid for 2 years from the date the results are announced.
- When will next year's dates be published?
- The official schedule for the following year is announced by the end of October. This page checks the official schedule every month.
- Can I use this calculator for the speaking test?
- No. The speaking test is scored on a separate scale that cannot be worked out from raw points.
